From Monday, an Uber or DoorDash delivery driver in Australia will earn at least $31.30 an hour. The union has called the deal with DoorDash and Uber Eats a world first. The deal includes new dispute processes, feedback systems, representation rights, and personal injury insurance for drivers. But a closer look shows the minimum wage works a little differently than people might expect.

Gig economy workers have struggled for more than a decade with low pay and little protection. They are often treated as independent contractors, not employees, so they miss out on basic rights. Australia's industrial umpire, the Fair Work Commission, largely kept the proposed conditions. The big question now is whether drivers genuinely benefit and whether the cost of takeaways will rise.
