Indigenous leaders look to the future at Garma: 'People are feeling strong again'

At the 26th Garma festival, Gumatj leaders announced plans for a new land council. They want to be 'part of the economic life of this nation.' Noel Pearson spoke about the need for change, saying the failure to deliver improvements for Indigenous Australians is 'no longer just a moral failure but a civilisational one.' Festival co-founder Witiyana Marika recalled the first Garma meeting in 1999 held in someone's back yard. He said people now feel strong again about their culture and future.

Garma was created by late Yolngu leaders Galarrwuy Yunupingu and Mandawuy Yunupingu, along with Witiyana Marika. The brothers wanted to preserve Yolngu culture and create a platform for political dialogue. Over 26 years, Garma has become a major event where Indigenous leaders speak directly to the Australian government. The festival has seen many political moments, including prime ministers making policy announcements. This year's theme focused on hope and economic independence for Indigenous communities. The new land council plan is a step toward that goal.
